Mother's Day snuck up on me this year! With all the chaos surrounding COVID-19 and social distancing, I didn't quite realize it was this weekend until earlier this week. Additionally, due to COVID-19, many places have been experiencing shipping delays, so even Amazon won't be guaranteed to arrive on time. I have a few ideas for ways to celebrate your mom if, like me, you kind of dropped the ball this year.
The first category of gift ideas are things that she can enjoy on Mother's Day and as an added bonus support local small businesses in her community. I will be recommending specifically local Denver businesses, but a quick google search should give you recommendations in your mother's area.
Flowers: Flowers are a classic Mother's day gift for a reason. They brighten up your space (especially during this time when we are spending so much time at home) and they aren't always something we think to buy ourselves. Instead of going with a large national company this year, try supporting local florists who may be struggling without their typical events.
Denver Recommendation: The Perfect Petal
Dinner: Most restaurants across the US are still closed for sit-down dining, but you can still treat your mom to a meal from her favorite local restaurant. Just make sure they deliver either directly, or through a 3rd party like Doordash.
Denver recommendation: Bar Dough
Sweet Treat: If your mom has a sweet tooth, think about having a local bakery deliver some of her favorite treats.
Denver recommendation: Mermaids Bakery
Brunch: While you can't actually make your mom breakfast in bed this year, you can have one show up on her doorstep. Similar to the dinner delivery, many brunch restaurants are also providing delivery.
Denver recommendation: Snooze
A Bottle of Wine: Just because she can't head out to the bar, doesn't mean she can't still have a glass of her favorite wine. There are tons of alcohol delivery services that you can book fora Mother's Day delivery of whatever her favorite is.
Denver recommendation: Infinite Monkey Theorem
Chocolate: If your mom is anything like my mom, then she'll love receiving a box of chocolate. My mom doesn't discriminate against chocolate, but I love the idea of supporting a local candy maker or chocolatier.
Denver recommendation: Deiters Chocolates
If getting things delivered in her area can be a little hit or miss, there a few digital gifts that can come straight to her email inbox.
One easy option is to purchase some gift cards for some of her favorite places. Normally, I'm not a big fan of giving gift cards as gifts, but I think during these Corona times, it can serve as a great way to support small businesses cash flow, as well as be a reminder that eventually we'll be able to return to the doing things in the world. While you could certainly buy her a gift card to use at a local restaurant or boutique once this is all over, I think my favorite idea is buying her a gift card to a local salon, so she can have a manicure on you when this is all over.
I also love the idea of donating to a nonprofit in her name. It's a gift that gives back! You should give to an organization that is close to your mom's heart, but if you need some ideas these are some of my favorites for Mother's Day.
Feeding America: While not specifically Mother's Day specific, I don't think any list during COVID-19 would be complete without this organization.
Partners in Health (specifically their maternal mortality project): Partners in Health is an international nonprofit that works to support healthcare infrastructures globally. I think support other moms this Mother's Day is the perfect way to give back to yours.
Baby2Baby: This nonprofit helps to support the basic necessity of babies and children living in poverty.
Lastly, I am throwing some traditional gifts into the mix. All of these gifts are from Target or Nordstrom, who both have a curbside pick-up option, so if you are lucky enough to live close to your mom, you could pick up the gifts and leave them on her doorstep. Or if you don't live close enough for the drop-off, you can ship them and let her know gifts are on the way soon!
Happy Mother's Day to all you moms out there!
