If you opened Instagram last week, you probably heard about Marissa’s (@fashionambitionist) boyfriend’s elaborate Instagram engagement and wedding. It was a 4-day long affair with pit stops up and down the East coast ending with a wedding at a gorgeous French Chateau just outside Paris. Today if you search Marissa and Gabe there is tons of internet drama about whether this was all just a big publicity stunt or not. Regardless, it was so fun to follow along! Here are a few of our favorite moments.
Marissa’s epic 4-day long proposal and wedding journey began with a flywheel class. An exercise class might not be on the typically list of pre-wedding parties, but it was a great way for Marissa to celebrate her impending engagement with her friends from NYC.
We love this idea as an alternative to an engagement party or a bridal shower. Most studios will let you book a private class. So schedule a class, invite your friends, and maybe finish with brunch. Sounds like the perfect Saturday to us!
Another detail we loved from Marissa’s flywheel class was the matching T-shirts. Everyone had t-shirt that said # riellove, which was their hashtag for the wedding and the whole proposal. If you do decide to do an exercise class as one of your pre-wedding celebrations, I think matching tees is a must. Here are some of my favorite customizable options:
Shortly after Marissa finished up her flywheel class, she was whisked back to her apartment for some a quick glam and then she was sent off to the Hamptons. Gabe had rented her a gorgeous place. And she spent the evening with a couple friends, enjoying dinner and participating in a bit of a scavenger hunt.
I use the term scavenger hunt pretty loosely here, since there were really no clues and her gifts were just delivered to her throughout the night. A scavenger hunt is an elaborate engagement classic and always adds a nice element of surprise.
Marissa’s engagement hunt (after a quick switch due to some travel delays) ended with her getting a monogrammed key necklace with her new monogram. As you may have noticed, I love a good monogram, especially during a wedding when you are celebrating your initials changing. I think this is the perfect gift during someone’s engagement season. Here are some of my favorite monogram necklaces:
The next morning, Marissa hopped on a plane to Miami. Gabe (her soon to be fiancé) was still mysteriously absent. Here she celebrated her impending engagement with a dinner with friends. Gabe chose one of their favorite restaurants. He sent some more Instagram stories, which the whole crew watched together. Take a note from Gabe and think about adding some video into your engagement parties or rehearsal dinner. Video allows you to prepare something ahead of time, so you don’t need to stress about it on the day of your party, but you can still share a little piece of your story.
For this dinner, Marissa is wearing the cutest lace romper. I went ahead and rounded up some similar styles:
The next day Marissa headed to Paris! Another quick glam and she’s picked up and driven to a gorgeous French Chateau. She’s finally reunited with Gabe on the lawn of this gorgeous chateau and what we’ve been waiting for finally happens. Gabe proposes and it’s all captured on video. Your proposal can pass by in a blur, so getting a videographer to capture the moment can help you savor that memory.
For her engagement Marissa wore silver sparkly cocktail dress. Here are some similar finds:
Marissa may have had the shortest engagement of all time, since her wedding happened just a few minutes later. She was married a balcony of the French Chateau surrounded by her and Gabe’s immediate family.
She made a quick change into a two-piece wedding dress with a lace crop top and tulle skirt. Here are some similar styles.
Things we loved!
The groom taking control of the wedding planning process!
We hear all too often the narrative of the bridezilla who takes control over everything on her wedding and her fiancé who wants nothing to do with the wedding planning process. We love that Marissa and Gabe flipped the script. He planned a gorgeous proposal and wedding and she got to enjoy all the surprises he had in store for her. Even if you want a little more control over your day than Marissa, try giving your spouse a couple areas of the wedding day to take control over and surprise you with.
Inclusive of different people in her life!
Even though her engagement was super short, we loved that she got to celebrate with all the people in her life that were important to her. She had big dinners, quiet girls nights, and even a spin class, but they all served to celebrate the same thing, her and Gabe and their new life together.
All the outfit changes!
With a user name like the @fashionambitionist, we would have expected nothing less than a couple outfit changes. We loved all of Marissa’s looks throughout her engagement, from her wedding dress to orange sundress in Miami.
Of course weddings are a big deal, but we always appreciate a couple that doesn’t take things too seriously. There was joy and fun around every turn. Because they had such a short time to enjoy their wedding and engagement, they lived ever moment to its fullest and made the most of their time.
You do you!
Maybe a surprise wedding isn’t for you, that’s fine. I think the biggest thing we can take away from all the hype surrounding Marissa and Gabe’s nuptial is it’s okay to do your own thing. Abandon traditions that don’t make sense for you and find joy in celebrating in your own way.
